An ISP (internet service providers) is a company that gives access to the Internet. These access ISPs connect their customers directly to the Internet. Hosting ISPs lease service space for smaller businesses and host other peoples servers. Transit ISPs provide large tubes to connect hosting ISPs to access ISPs.
As the story goes a long time ago the Internet began as a closed network between government research labs and relevant parts of universities. As it grew in popularity these colleges and universities began giving more members access. Thus commercial ISPs began to blossom. The very first commercial ISP was The World in Massachusetts.
